How to Customise a Squarespace Template & Make it Your Own
You’ve finally taken the jump and purchased a Squarespace template, yay! But how do you customise your template to fully reflect who you are, what your business does, and who you serve? You can do this by changing fonts, colours, photos, and adding a bit of personality to spice things up a bit!
Custom website design can be expensive and not realistic for all business owners, especially if you’re just starting out. Squarespace website templates can help you kickstart your online presence, look professional, and easily build a site without the hassle of doing it from scratch.

So, without further ado, here are my four top tips for how to customise a Squarespace template and really make it your own.
Changing Fonts in a Squarespace template
One of the biggest things you can do to make your website your own is to change the visual elements like fonts, colours, and photos. When it comes to changing fonts, it’s not always best to just choose the ones that catch your eye! Here are three quick tips to simplify your decision.
Research font psychology - yes! There is a method that goes along with choosing fonts for your brand. For instance, serif fonts typically portray more delicate and sentimental vibes whereas sans serif fonts are more bold and modern, then script fonts are considered feminine and dainty. Ofcourse, there are lots of exceptions to the rules here. If in doubt, take your research to Pinterest and type in some keywords for the style and vibe you’re looking for. (example: bold, feminine Squarespace font combinations).
Think about your ideal client - it can be easy to get ahead of yourself and just choose fonts that you like, but it’s important to choose visual elements that appeal to your target audience. Doing this will help you capture their attention and motivate them to continue exploring your website.
Don’t choose too many fonts - last but not least, try to use between 1 and 3 fonts on your website. Choose one font for headings, another for paragraph text, and another more decorative font as an accent to inject personality into your website.
Pro tip: When choosing fonts for your website, try to choose ones that you can easily access elsewhere. This will allow you to create Instagram graphics, email newsletters, and other marketing materials using the same fonts (which will also help you save time)!
Changing Colours in a Squarespace template
If you can’t tell by looking at my website, colour is one of my favourite things ever. So whether you’re like me and gravitate towards bright and bold colours or if neutrals are more your thing, you can easily add in your own colour palette to Squarespace and fully lean into your unique brand. But how do you choose a colour palette when there are hundreds of hues and shades of every colour out there? Here are my best tips!
Start with a moodboard - A brand moodboard can set the tone and serve as your own personal visual guide for your brand - or as I like to call it - your visual compass! It can take the vibe in your head and translate it into something you can actually see (and even touch!) to put you in the right mood and embody an experience that will make your ideal clients and potential customers feel right at home when they interact with your brand.
Pull images from your moodboard - Coolors is my absolute favourite tool for creating the perfect colour palette from your brand mood board. They have this really cool feature where you can upload an image and actually select different colours from that image to form the base of your own personalised colour palette! You could upload your brand moodboard and pick colours straight from the image you uploaded for colours that align with your moodboard. Pick colours intuitively - While some designers prefer to lean deeply into the world of colour psychology, I say go with your gut! Once you pick some colours from your moodboard, take a step back and think about how they work together, the emotions they make you feel, and how aligned the colours are with the direction in which you want to take your brand and website.
Changing Images in a Squarespace template
What fun would a website be if you didn’t have any images of the person behind the business?! Most website templates either use stock photos or partner with a photographer whose images aren’t usable on your own website once you purchase the template. Why not try getting a bit creative and add in some fun pictures of you?!
Now, I don’t mean any old picture. And certainly not that dodgy mugshot you took 8 years ago for your passport photo, or that photo of you at a family wedding with most of your Nan and Grandad cropped out of it. We’re talking about a lovely, smiley picture of you wearing clothes that you love to wear (bonus points if you wear something that matches your brand colours!). Are there any props you can use that instantly tells a story or shows a little insight into your life? Whether it’s your fave mug that you endlessly fill with coffee each day, your trusty notepad or even your precious fur-baby - experiment with different props that add that personal touch and bring your pictures to life.
There are also some amazing places for you to find unique stock images that you won’t see on every website out there. Here are some of my favourites!
Unsplash - This is my absolute fave! Seriously great stock image website with a handy search feature. I would say Unsplash is the most comprehensive free stock library out there, and not a cheesy, stereotypical stock image in sight. Sounds amazing!
Burst - Burst is created by Shopify so they focus heavily on eCommerce businesses. They have a really great ‘business ideas’ feature where they’ve curated image collections according to the types of products/services you’re selling.
Pexels - Another amazing free image source with a huge range of beautiful stock images to use. Whoop!
Death to Stock - I love Death to Stock as they provide truly unique, creative sets and multiple images that have a cohesive aesthetic, which is super helpful if you’re trying to source a collection of images that match a certain vibe. Plus, you can sign up to their mailing list and they’ll send you free monthly photos. Just save these emails for later and before you know it, you’ve got yourself a great resource. They also offer a 14-day free trial where you can download as many images as you like, so make the most of it and stockpile a load to save for later! If you fall in love with their collections, membership options are amazing value for money too (around £12 per month)
Adding Personality to Your Squarespace template
Changing images, colours, and fonts are really just the beginning of what you can do to customise your website template. You can customise your buttons and CTAs, add in animation, create unique background images using fun shapes and patterns from Canva, and write copy that is entertaining.
